Dealer sites often sell below MSRP. The same part can also show a slightly different MSRP on another site or on another day. Ask for the part number that matches your VIN before you compare quotes, because roof glass can change with trim and options. Prices for windshields, side windows and back glass are in our guide to how much car glass replacement costs.

Why the price changes so much from car to car

Each sunroof glass part number has its own list price, and car size does not predict it. A 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze sunroof glass lists for $1,341.35. A 2013-2018 Toyota RAV4 glass lists for $998.00. A 2016-2022 Chevrolet Spark glass lists for $145.38.

Bar chart of OEM sunroof glass list prices on October 24, 2026: Chevrolet Spark $145.38, Chevrolet Trax $261.42, Honda Accord $497.63, Honda CR-V $593.42, Toyota RAV4 $998.00, Chevrolet Cruze $1,341.35 and Tahoe, Silverado and Escalade $1,520.92 for single panels; Kia Sorento rear $312.58, Ford Escape front $638.67 and rear $647.57, Jeep Grand Cherokee rear $742.73, Kia Sorento front $743.18 and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport sliding glass $1,399.23 for panoramic panels

One glass part can serve a whole family of vehicles. GM part 84515806 fits the 2015-2020 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade. It also fits the 2014-2019 Silverado and Sierra crew cab. The Escalade owner and the Silverado owner see the same list price.

Panoramic roofs usually have two or more panels. On the 2013-2019 Ford Escape, the front glass lists for $638.67 and the rear glass for $647.57. Only the broken panel has to be replaced.

Check what the part number includes. Ford’s catalog says the Escape front glass includes the seal. Kia sells a Sorento panoramic weatherstrip separately, for $102.63. Hyundai lists the Santa Fe Sport front glass seal at $71.19. Availability can also push the price up. On October 24, 2026, kiapartsnow.com showed the 2012 Sorento front glass as unavailable because of a supply shortage.

Labor: how many hours automakers allow

Automaker labor times for replacing one sunroof glass panel run from 0.6 to 2.9 hours. These are warranty times from service bulletins and recall documents filed with NHTSA. Shops set their own times, so use these figures as a benchmark.

The roof design sets the time. A sliding panel bolts to the mechanism. A fixed panel is bonded to the roof with urethane, like a windshield. Hyundai’s procedure waits one hour for the urethane to cure before the car is moved. Mercedes-Benz says the car must not be driven for at least 10 hours after the front fixed panel is glued in. The steps are covered in how to replace laminated sunroof glass.

AAA’s 2023 repair-cost study priced labor at $75 an hour for body work and $110 for mechanical work. At those rates, 0.6 hours costs $45 to $66 and 2.9 hours costs $217.50 to $319 (our calculation). A 2014-2015 Cruze glass plus 0.6 hours comes to $1,386.35 to $1,407.35. A Grand Cherokee rear panel plus 2.9 hours comes to $960.23 to $1,061.73. Both totals leave out seals, adhesive, supplies and tax.

Glass only, frame or the whole sunroof assembly

Only the glass needs replacing when the frame, tracks and motor are undamaged. Automakers sell those parts separately, and they cost much more. A complete sunroof assembly is the most expensive route.

Labelled panoramic sunroof parts for the 2013-2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with list prices: front glass seal $71.19, front panel $868.82, sliding glass $1,399.23, frame assembly $4,419.27 and complete panorama roof assembly $10,103.74, compared with Toyota RAV4 glass $998.00 and housing $1,422.15 and Kia Sorento front glass $743.18 and frames $1,967.47 to $3,458.80

The frame needs replacing only when it is damaged. GM bulletin PI0176C told technicians to replace the broken plastic glass guides on 2010-2014 Camaro sunroofs and not to replace the frame. Chrysler’s minivan bulletin repaired the roof support flange and replaced the glass only if it was scratched. Ask the shop to show you the damage before you approve a frame or an assembly. On the Santa Fe Sport, the frame lists at 3.2 times the sliding glass and the complete roof at 7.2 times.

Some glass part numbers already include small parts. A Kia parts specialist confirmed on kiapartsnow.com that the 2012 Sorento front panel comes with the frame and brackets attached to the glass. That glass frame is a different part from the $1,967.47 sunroof frame assembly. Hyundai also lists a separate Santa Fe Sport front panel at $868.82.

Tempered or laminated glass, and when a chip can be repaired

Broken tempered sunroof glass cannot be repaired, because it crumbles into small granular pieces. Laminated roof glass can sometimes be repaired, because a plastic layer holds its two glass layers together. The US repair standard, ROLAGS 002-2022, covers laminated glass only.

In 2018, Ferrari, Tesla and Volvo told US senators that all their panoramic sunroofs used laminated glass, Consumer Reports reported. BMW, Fiat Chrysler, GM, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen said they used tempered glass only. Lineups have changed since then. See which cars have laminated glass and laminated glass vs tempered glass.

Tesla publishes repair limits for Model 3 roof glass. No repair is allowed within about 2 in (50 mm) of the front and rear edges or about 10 in (253 mm) of the side edges. Elsewhere, chips and cracks under about 2 in (50 mm) in the outer layer can be repaired. Inner-layer damage means a new panel. Each panel allows three repairs at most.

NHTSA investigation EA14-002 looked at tempered panoramic roofs on the 2011-2013 Kia Sorento and closed in 2021 without a recall. Its industry review counted more than 4,000 shattering complaints across 97 models with large glass roofs.

Does insurance pay for sunroof glass?

Comprehensive coverage usually pays for sunroof glass broken by something other than a crash, minus your deductible. Progressive describes comprehensive as cover for non-collision damage such as hail, vandalism and falling trees. Damage from a crash falls under collision coverage.

Compare the quote with your deductible before you file. With a $500 deductible, the insurer pays only the part of the bill above $500. Progressive offers a $0 deductible option for glass-only replacement claims in certain states. Ask your insurer whether that option includes roof glass.

State zero-deductible laws may not help. Florida’s law waives the deductible for damage to the windshield, and its text names no other glass. Read does insurance cover windshield replacement and do you have to pay a deductible for windshield repair for the state rules.

Check for free fixes first. GM inspected sunroof glass on 2014-2015 Cruze and 2015 Regal models and replaced it where needed, free until December 31, 2017. Hyundai replaced rear roof glass on certain 2024 Santa Fe models in a service campaign. Check your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask a dealer about open campaigns.

How to get an accurate sunroof glass quote

A useful quote names the part number, the labor hours and who will do the work. Safelite, which Progressive calls the country’s largest auto glass replacement company, says it does not repair or replace sunroof glass. Dealers do the work. Hyundai’s bulletin also shows dealers sending fixed roof glass to automotive glass companies.

How to get a sunroof glass replacement quote

  1. Get the part number

Give a dealer parts counter your VIN and ask for the glass part number and its MSRP. Roof glass can change with trim and options.

  2. Check recalls and campaigns

Enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. Ask the dealer about open service campaigns for the sunroof.

  3. Ask what the part includes

Ask whether the seal, weatherstrip and brackets come with the glass or cost extra.

  4. Ask for the hours and the rate

Ask how many labor hours the quote assumes and what the shop charges per hour. Compare the hours with the 0.6 to 2.9 hours in automaker bulletins.

  5. Ask whether the frame is damaged

Approve a frame or a full assembly only for damage the shop can show you, such as bent rails or broken mounts.

  6. Ask about the cure time

A bonded fixed panel needs the adhesive to cure before the car moves. Hyundai specifies one hour and Mercedes-Benz 10 hours before driving.

  7. Compare the total with your deductible

File a claim only when the total is clearly higher than your comprehensive deductible.

Genuine glass matches the original fit and seal. Some sellers offer aftermarket roof panels at lower prices. Read OEM vs aftermarket glass for car replacement before you accept a non-genuine panel. Get at least two written quotes for the same part number, so labor and supplies are the only difference. Keep the quotes, because they show the part number and hours if the insurer asks.

Frequently asked questions

Can Safelite replace sunroof glass?

No. Safelite’s help center says it cannot repair or replace sunroof glass and works only on windshields, side windows and rear windows. A dealer or a shop that works on sunroofs can quote the job.

Can you replace just the sunroof glass?

Yes. Automakers sell the glass as its own part number, separate from the frame, tracks and motor. The frame or the whole assembly needs replacing only when it is damaged too.

How long does sunroof glass replacement take?

Automaker bulletins allow 0.6 to 2.9 hours of labor for one panel. A bonded fixed panel also needs cure time: one hour before moving in Hyundai’s procedure and 10 hours before driving in Mercedes-Benz’s. See how long car glass replacement takes for other windows.

What should I do after a sunroof shatters?

Most injuries in NHTSA’s Kia Sorento investigation were scratches or minor cuts, and many happened while owners cleaned up the glass. Wear gloves and follow how to clean broken glass from a car.

Does insurance cover a sunroof that shattered on its own?

Comprehensive coverage covers non-collision damage, so a shattered sunroof is usually a comprehensive claim. The deductible applies unless your policy has a glass option that waives it.
