Short answer

To prevent car windows from fogging up, keep the cabin air dry and the glass clean. Run the A/C with outside air instead of recirculation, and aim warm air at the windshield and floor. Take wet mats and gear out of the car, check the cabin air filter, and add an interior anti-fog coating on clean, untinted glass.

What keeps car windows from fogging up

Car windows stay clear when the glass is warmer than the dew point of the air touching it. The National Weather Service defines the dew point as the temperature to which air must be cooled to reach saturation. People, wet clothes and snow add water to the cabin air and raise its dew point. Cold weather cools the glass. Prevention therefore works on two levers: take water out of the cabin air, and keep warm, dry air moving over the glass.

Five habits do most of the work. An automaker, a safety agency or a product maker documents each one. The physics behind them is explained in why car windows fog up on the inside.

Heater, A/C and fresh-air settings that stop fog forming

The settings that keep fog from forming are the A/C on, outside air, warm air on the windshield and floor, and a medium fan. Chevrolet gives this combination to keep the windshield clear once it has been defogged.

Keep the A/C on even in cold weather. Toyota says the A/C dehumidifies the air and that the windows fog up more easily with it off. Heat alone does not dry the air, because heating leaves the dew point unchanged, as the American Meteorological Society notes. Set the temperature warm, but not near the upper or lower limit, as Honda advises.

Leave recirculation off. Honda tells owners to keep fresh air mode on in normal situations, and Ford blocks recirculation in maximum defrost to prevent fogging. Some dealer guides that rank for this question advise recirculation or the A/C off instead.

Mazda says its A/C may not work near 32°F (0°C). In humid summer weather, Mazda and Honda warn that cold air on the windshield fogs the outside of the glass, a case covered in how to fix windshield fog on the outside.

Keep water out of the cabin: mats, gear, snow and the filter

Less water in the cabin means a lower dew point and less fog. An adult breathes out about 400 mL of water a day, or about 17 mL an hour, according to Kerry Brandis’s Fluid Physiology text. Wet mats, coats and umbrellas add more as they dry.

  • Floor mats. Nissan’s X-Trail manual says wet floor mats will not dry completely inside the vehicle and should be removed and dried. NHTSA warns never to stack mats, because a loose mat can interfere with the pedals.
  • Coats and umbrellas. Keep wet gear in the trunk or in a closed bag.
  • Snow. Kia tells owners to clear snow from the hood and the cowl air inlet to reduce fogging inside the windshield.
  • Cabin air filter. Honda says the filter may need replacing if airflow weakens noticeably and the windows fog up easily. Toyota Canada suggests inspecting it every six months or 8,000 km (about 5,000 miles).

Fog that returns on every drive, even with these habits, can point to a leak or a fault in the climate system. The checks are in why your windshield is always foggy.

Keep the inside of the glass clean

Clean the inside of the windshield before fog season and before every anti-fog application. Rain-X, Invisible Glass and Gyeon all tell users to clean the glass first. The film that builds up on the inside is real. A Thermo Fisher technical note explains that heat makes interior plastics and textiles release compounds that condense on the windshield. The same note says this film limits and bends the light that passes through.

Use an ammonia-free cleaner on tinted glass, because AAA Club Alliance says ammonia can damage window tint. Keep bare hands off the glass, since AAA says skin oil leaves smears. Consumer Reports adds that rubbing fog away with a cloth can leave streaks that show in sun and headlight glare.

The camera area needs care. Toyota’s manual says glass cleaner must not touch the front camera lens, and Subaru tells EyeSight owners to cover the camera with paper while cleaning. The full method is in how to clean a windshield without streaks.

Anti-fog products: what the makers say and their limits

An interior anti-fog product coats the glass so condensation spreads into a clear film instead of beading into droplets. Rain-X describes its anti-fog as a hydrophilic, or water-loving, coating. MIT researchers explain the effect: on a water-loving surface, droplets flatten and merge into a uniform, transparent sheet. The same MIT article notes that anti-fog sprays must be reapplied to stay effective. Each maker sets its own directions and limits.

ProductMaker’s directionsLimits the maker statesHow long it lasts
Rain-X Interior Glass Anti-FogA small amount on a paper towel or cotton cloth; wipe one section at a time; final wipe with the dry sideInterior glass and mirrors; clear glass only, not over tintNo figure; reapply as needed

Gyeon Q² AntiFogClean the glass; spread the product until a light haze appears; wipe off the residueNone stated on the product pageAt least two months, depending on conditions

If haze appears after an excess of Rain-X, the maker says to sprinkle the glass with water and wipe it dry. Product picks are compared in the best anti-fog for car windows, and the method is in how to use anti-fog spray on a windshield.

How to get your car ready for winter fog

Get a car ready for winter fog by testing the defrosters, checking the cabin filter and coating clean glass while the weather is still mild. NHTSA’s winter checklist says safe winter driving depends on achieving and maintaining the best visibility possible.

How to get your car ready for winter fog

  1. Test the front and rear defrosters

NHTSA’s winter checklist asks drivers to check that both work properly.

  2. Check the cabin air filter

Replace it if airflow is weak. Toyota Canada suggests an inspection every six months or 8,000 km.

  3. Run the A/C on a mild day

Confirm that it engages. Mazda says its A/C may not function as the outside temperature approaches 32°F (0°C).

  4. Clean the inside glass

Use an ammonia-free cleaner and two microfiber towels.

  5. Apply an interior anti-fog coating

Do it while the air is above 40°F (4°C), the minimum on the Invisible Glass label.

  6. Fit one secured mat per seat

Use the retention clips. NHTSA says never to stack mats.

  7. Look for leaks

NHTSA’s checklist includes having the vehicle checked for leaks. A damp carpet means water is getting in.

  8. Fill the washer reservoir with winter fluid

NHTSA recommends winter fluid with de-icer and a spare supply in the car.

On winter mornings, clear snow from the hood and the air inlet below the windshield before you start the car. Select outside air and the A/C from the first minute, so the cabin air dries while the glass is still cold. If the defroster blows weak or cold air, see car windshield defroster not working.

Rainy commutes, overnight parking and sleeping in the car

On rainy days

Rain fogs the windows mainly through the water people carry into the car. Start the drive with the A/C on and outside air selected, before the glass fogs. Put wet umbrellas and coats in the trunk, and lift soaked mats out at home to dry. Consumer Reports says a slightly open window helps when the car is full of passengers.

Overnight and in the morning

A parked car fogs overnight when its glass cools below the dew point of the air left inside. On a clear, calm night, objects outdoors become colder than the surrounding air, the National Weather Service explains. Take wet items out before you park. Honda tells drivers to clear all the windows before driving, and how to defog a windshield quickly gives the steps.

When you sleep in the car

One adult breathes out about 130 mL of water over eight hours, at Brandis’s figure. A slightly open window lets that moisture out. NHTSA warns against running the car for long periods with the windows up, because of carbon monoxide. The CDC adds that a snow-blocked tailpipe lets the gas build up quickly inside the vehicle.

Shaving cream, potatoes and cat litter: what the evidence supports

We found no controlled test of these home tricks on car glass. Shaving cream has a plausible mechanism, the potato has no documented support, and a cat litter sock absorbs only a small, fixed amount of water.

TrickThe ideaWhat is supported
Shaving creamSoap-like ingredients leave a film that spreads condensationGillette Foamy lists sodium lauryl sulfate, which PubChem classes as a surfactant. Anti-fog products also work by making glass water-loving. No automaker, glass maker or testing group publishes a test or a duration.
Dish soap or baby shampooThe same surfactant ideaNo maker directions and no published test
Raw potatoA starch film blocks fogNo automaker, glass maker, safety agency or test lab documents it
Cat litter in a sockSilica gel crystals absorb water from the airOil-Dri’s 2024 filing describes crystal litter as silica gel. The Canadian Conservation Institute measured regular silica gel holding about 31 g of water per 100 g at 60% humidity. A 1-pound sock would hold about 143 mL, then stop absorbing.

That 143 mL equals roughly 8 hours of one adult’s breathing at Brandis’s figure. With four people breathing, the same sock would be full in about 2 hours. Any residue left on the inside glass can blur the view, as the Thermo Fisher note on interior film explains. NHTSA does list kitty litter in its winter kit, for a different job: traction when a car is stuck in snow.

Frequently asked questions

Should the A/C be on or off to stop car windows fogging?

On, with outside air selected. Toyota says the windows fog up more easily with the A/C off. In freezing weather the A/C may not run, as Mazda notes, so heat and outside air do the work.

Does shaving cream really stop car windows from fogging?

Its surfactants make an anti-fog effect plausible, but no automaker, glass maker or testing group publishes a test or a duration. Gyeon, by contrast, claims at least two months per coat of its anti-fog product.

Will vinegar keep car windows from fogging up?

No maker documents vinegar as an anti-fog coating. Vinegar is a cleaner, and clean glass is the starting point for any anti-fog product. The method is in how to clean a windshield with vinegar.

Can I use anti-fog spray on tinted windows?

Not with Rain-X, which says its anti-fog must go on clear glass with nothing on it, such as tint. Check the label of any other product before you use it on window film.

How do I stop windows fogging when sleeping in the car?

Leave a window slightly open to let breath moisture out. NHTSA warns not to run the car for long periods with the windows up, and to clear snow from the exhaust pipe first, to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
